Examples of Stage I and II Spiritual Development
“Can you give us personal stories of people at various stages of spiritual development?” Based on the findings of M. Scott Peck and other noted psychiatrist, I think so.
Dr. Peck saw when he used the same therapeutic approaches on different patients – he got startlingly different results. He was the same therapist. His therapy was the same, but he obtained “utterly different outcomes from a religious point of view.” Continue reading →
One Approach to Understanding Ourself and Others
Have you ever wondered:
- why many people view life in terms of right and wrong, black and white, and yet others people seeing things in more shades of gray,
- why some take religious texts literally, while others understand them as metaphoric,
- why others think their religion is “the only true one,” while others view all religions as streams leading to the same ocean?
One possible answer lies in what researchers have found; as we experience emotional and intellectual growth, we progress spiritually. Just as we experience phases in human physical and psychological growth, we can also define stages in normal spiritual development. Continue reading →

Learning to Appreciate Life
Expressing gratitude is important to our well-being. Unless we accept and appreciate what comes to us in life, we will never receive the benefits of contentment and happiness. Authorities on the benefits of gratitude encourage us to consider how recognizing what we have, versus what we think we need and want, can change everything. Continue reading →
Fear of Moving Ahead
A few years ago in Honolulu, my wife and I became acquainted with an attractive, Japanese-American girl, who had spent her entire life in Hawaii. As we got to know her better, she revealed that she was pondering and perplexed about whether she should go to college “on the mainland,” meaning San Francisco. The idea of moving to San Francisco and leaving Hawaii for the first time was giving her no peace at all. On top of that her grandmother, who probably was a buddhist, had taught her to always seek peace in every part of her life. The young woman was searching for an answer. Continue reading →

Spiritual or Religious?
Spirituality is in vogue. As Americans use the term “religious,” it is increasingly limited to dogma, ritual and other religious practices, and institutions. Whereas, “spiritual” and “spirituality” are far more inclusive, encompassing all of their lives. Large groups of Americans want to deepen their spirituality, and self-understanding, according to surveys. Continue reading →

Deep Inner Calm
During my spiritual awakening years ago, I regularly experienced something very profound. Every night after work, I got into my car, and put the sound track of the TV series “Cosmos” into the player. Being in the late fall, it was dark enough for the street lights to be on. As I settled into the car seat and listened to the wonderful music of “Cosmos,” a deep and intense calm came over me. It was like nothing I ever experienced before.
